History of the DSAQ

The Down Syndrome Association of Queensland Inc. (DSAQ) was founded in April 1976 primarily as a parent support organisation, to offer assistance to families in the same situation and act as an advocate for people with Down syndrome and their families.

Today, the Association continues to be committed to upholding the rights of children and adults with Down syndrome and ensuring that their needs and those of their families are met. Through its current activities, the association works for a better quality of life for people with Down syndrome by supporting and strengthening families and promoting positive and realistic images of people with Down syndrome,

The DSAQ works for the inclusion of people with Down syndrome as valuable members of the community. The organisation's vision is for people with Down syndrome to access appropriate resources and support in order to reach their full potential.

Currently the Association provides information and support, not only to families, but also through affiliate membership which includes teachers, therapists, medical professionals and other community workers. Information is also available to the general public, a service used particularly by students and hospital staff.
